Thandiswa Mazwai on why South African Jazz Still Matters

LYRICS

Thandiswa - Belede || Now Available on iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/za/album/belede/id1174381329 Right after inking down a new deal with Universal Music South Africa, Thandiswa Mazwai announced that she will release a new album on November 25 2016 titled Belede. It has been six years since Mazwai last released an album. Following on the success of her last two solo albums Zabalaza and Ibokwe, the new album will be Thandiswa Mazwai's third solo studio album. The upcoming album, a jazz tribute, will see her revisit classic anthems by Busi Mhlongo, Caiphus Semenya, Letta Mbulu, Hugh Masekela, Dorothy Masuka and Miriam Makeba. "It has been six years since I released new music, which is how I have always worked. I have been away writing. My fans should not expect that much of a departure from my past sound," she said. "Making this album was a sonic delight and I feel blessed to have been able to sing some of these songs and pay tribute to some of the most rebellious musicians of my time. "I've re-imagined these songs for a new space and time, and what's interesting is that even though a lot of these songs were written as rebel music against apartheid, they still make sense now. They still have the same impact, ask the same questions." She worked with drummer Ayanda Sikade, pianist Nduduzo Makhathini and bassist Herbie Tsoaeli on the album named after her late mother. Mazwai revealed that she would release another album in the next eight months or so - this time with new original songs. Asked if she would release a song about the current state of the nation, she replied: "There wouldn't be just one song about the current political climate, there will be so many."

Sathima's Windsong trailer.mov

LYRICS

In this film, which is shot in New York and Cape Town, the life history of South African-born jazz singer, Sathima Bea Benjamin, unfolds through her own reflections and reminiscence, which are woven together with the music she has created and with the reflections of five people who know her work and the milieu which shaped it. In her flat in the Chelsea Hotel in New York, where she has lived for thirty two years, Sathima patches together her journeys, literal and figurative, from Apartheid South Africa and 'the pattern of brokenness' from which she hailed, to Europe and a chance meeting and recording with Duke Ellington, to starting afresh and setting up her own record company in New York. The film is a celebration of Sathima's work and a meditation on jazz and diaspora. As it moves back and forth between Cape Town and New York, to the lyrics and rhythm of her music, it becomes, much like the title of her haunting song, Windsong, a reflection on history, time and place; on Apartheid, anti-Apartheid and their legacies, as well as the passionate questions of memory, displacement and belonging. The film is available through South Atlantic World Productions: http://www.saw-productions.com/content/sathimas-windsong

PASS presents: "It's a shame, they'll never change" with Lefifi Tladi, Sibusile Xaba & Tumi Mogorosi

LYRICS

Stories About Music in Africa: Lefifi Tladi x Tumi Mogorosi x Sibusile Xaba. Recorded at the Chimurenga Headquarters, April 2016. Born in 1987, Tumi is increasingly building a reputation in the South African jazz scene among the new crop of young Jazz musicians. Besides his intermittent formal studies at Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) which he completed in 2012, the young drummer has refined his brush strokes alongside prominent South African jazz musicians who count – among them trumpeter Feya Faku, bassist Herbie Tsoaeli as well as pianist Andile Yenana. Tumi was also part of the Gauteng Jazz Orchestra which opened the stage for world- renowned American trumpeter Wynton Marsalis during his 2011 premier of the Joy of Jazz festival. Tumi's debut album Project Elo dropped in 2013 to critical acclaim. Poet Lefifi Tladi I was born in Lady Selbourne, Pretoria in 1949. As a dynamic young man in his twenties, Lefifi used art to connect with and mobilise the Black Consciousness Movement. In 1969, he co-founded the popular band Dashiki and worked very closely with Geoff Mphakati, “his mentor”, who at the time was working for the US Embassy promoting works by black artists, sculptors, writers, poets and musicians. He then opened a small museum for contemporary Black Art in Ga-Rankuwa, west of Pretoria in 1970, which was forced to close four years later due to the onslaught of the security police. Lefifi was arrested by the security police soon after the Soweto uprising on 16 June 1976. He had been an obvious target because of his role in the growth of Black Consciousness. Lefifi went into exile in Botswana and continued pursuing his passion for art through several exhibitions in Gaborone. He co-promoted with Geoff Mphakati a touring exhibition in Sweden of works by artists from Pretoria and artists in exile. In 1977, he went to Nigeria as part of the ANC contingent to participate as a poet at the cultural festival FESTAC. In 1980, he studied art at Gerlesborgsskolan in Stockholm, Sweden. He used his art to create awareness of the South African plight all over Europe. Sibusile Xaba was born in Newcastle, KZN. Having found music as a passion at an early age, he became engrossed in the art form, regardless of circumstances. After completing matric, Sibusile decided to pursue music as a career and enrolled in a music college. With the knowledge acquired from college he recognized a need to study further and expand his musical capacity. It was at this point that he enrolled into university to study jazz and major in jazz guitar. This decision proved to be a vital turning point in his career. It led to tours around the world with Sibusile playing his love for all sorts of people, young and old, political and apolitical. Furthermore, it honored and privileged him with opportunities to share a message with the countless people that he has met in this journey. "Stories about Music in Africa" is an ongoing project of the Pan African Space Station, produced with the kind support of Pro Helvetia Johannesburg with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
